Volvo is expanding its collaborative safety network by deploying an over-the-air update that allows its electric vehicles to warn other drivers about animals in the road. The system specifically targets the detection of deer and moose to prevent collisions in high-risk wildlife corridors.
The update is being rolled out to the EX90, EX60, and ES90 models. Using a combination of onboard cameras and radar, these vehicles identify hazards on the roadway and tag them with precise GPS coordinates. This data is then uploaded to Volvo's central servers, which push alerts to other connected vehicles approaching the same location.
The Infrastructure of Connected Safety
This capability is part of a broader shift toward Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. Rather than relying solely on a single car's line-of-sight sensors, Volvo is leveraging its fleet as a distributed sensor network. By sharing hazard data in the cloud, a vehicle that has already passed a hazard can provide a critical early warning to a following car that may not yet have the animal in its own sensor range.
To maximize the impact of these warnings, Volvo is not keeping the data within its own ecosystem. The company is sharing this real-time information with traffic management centers and select partner brands through the European Data for Road Safety ecosystem. This cross-brand collaboration ensures that safety alerts reach a wider variety of drivers, regardless of the vehicle they are operating.
Implications for Road Safety
Wildlife collisions remain a significant safety challenge, often occurring in low-visibility conditions or on winding roads where reaction times are minimal. By extending the "sight" of a vehicle beyond its own physical sensors, Volvo is attempting to eliminate the element of surprise in these encounters. If a lead vehicle can digitally flag a moose on the shoulder, following drivers can decelerate before the animal enters their field of vision.
Future Outlook
As Volvo integrates more deeply with the European Data for Road Safety network, the industry is watching whether this model of open-source hazard sharing becomes a standard for all automotive manufacturers. While the current rollout focuses on specific EV models and large wildlife, the scalability of this GPS-tagged warning system could eventually encompass a wider array of road hazards, from debris to sudden accidents, further reducing the reliance on human reaction alone.
