Xiaomi targets family SUV market with SkyNomad EREV lineup

The tech giant launches four extended-range electric SUVs priced from RMB 209,900 to challenge domestic leaders.

Xiaomi has expanded its automotive footprint in China with the launch of the SkyNomad family of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). The move signals a strategic pivot toward the high-growth family SUV segment, offering vehicles that utilize gasoline engines as generators to charge batteries rather than drive the wheels directly.

The new lineup consists of four models: the N70 Pro, N70 Max, N90 Max, and the top-tier N90 Max Explorer. Pricing starts at RMB 209,900 for the N70 Pro, followed by RMB 239,900 for the N70 Max, RMB 269,900 for the N90 Max, and peaking at RMB 299,900 for the N90 Max Explorer.

Technical specifications vary across the range. The N70 Max is equipped with a 76 kWh battery providing 505 km of pure electric range and a combined range of 1,461 km. The flagship N90 Max pushes these limits further, offering a seven-seat layout and a combined range of up to 1,705 km based on CLTC standards.

Hardware and Intelligence

Across the SkyNomad series, Xiaomi has integrated high-end computing and sensing hardware. Every model features an NVIDIA Drive Thor chip capable of 700 TOPS, paired with 4D millimeter-wave radar to support advanced driver assistance. To enhance maneuverability for its larger frame, the N90 Max specifically features a turning radius of 5.95 metres.

For the outdoor-focused N90 Max Explorer, Xiaomi included a factory-integrated electric pop-up roof designed for camping. This pop-top roof is restricted for use only when the vehicle is parked away from public roads. This emphasis on versatility is echoed by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, who stated that six seats are insufficient for families, comparing the vehicle's interior to a house where owners can freely arrange and decorate their space.

Market Implications

This launch represents a direct challenge to established EREV leaders in China, such as Li Auto and AITO. By applying a disruptive pricing strategy, Xiaomi is undercutting competitors like the Li Auto L9 and AITO M9, offering high-specification, large-capacity vehicles at significantly lower price points. This aggressive positioning is intended to help the company reach its annual delivery target of 550,000 vehicles.

The Road Ahead

By establishing a foothold in the family vehicle segment, Xiaomi is building the infrastructure and brand loyalty necessary for its broader ambitions. The company has indicated plans to expand its automotive operations into Europe by 2027. Observers will now be watching to see if the SkyNomad's pricing can successfully peel away market share from the dominant domestic EREV players.
