Zoox has officially transitioned to commercial operations in Las Vegas, marking a pivotal shift toward paid autonomous mobility. The company began charging passengers for robotaxi rides on August 10, 2026, following regulatory approval to operate as an autonomous vehicle network company (AVNC).
According to the Nevada Transportation Authority, Zoox is authorized to deploy up to 100 robotaxis within a geofenced area of Las Vegas. Unlike many of its competitors, Zoox utilizes a purpose-built, bidirectional pod that completely eliminates the steering wheel and pedals. The vehicle features a unique interior layout with face-to-face seating, designed specifically for passenger transport rather than adapting a traditional car chassis.
A Ground-Up Approach to Safety
As an independent subsidiary of Amazon, Zoox has pursued a vertical integration strategy, developing its hardware and software from the ground up. This approach allows the company to implement safety measures that are not possible in retrofitted vehicles. Zoox reports that its robotaxi incorporates over 100 safety innovations not found in conventional automobiles.
Among these specialized features are a redesigned airbag system tailored to the vehicle's unique cabin geometry and a safety-focused active suspension system. These enhancements are part of a broader effort to establish a safety benchmark for vehicles that lack any manual override capabilities, moving the industry away from the "retrofit" model of adding sensors to existing car designs.
