4iG and SpaceX to Deploy Starlink Mobile and Sovereign Networks in Europe

Hungary’s 4iG Group and SpaceX have signed landmark agreements to deploy Starlink Mobile and a new suite of "Sovereign Solutions" across Europe. The partnership marks the first agreement of its kind on the continent, blending commercial satellite-to-mobile connectivity with dedicated national security infrastructure.

The agreements were signed in Bastrop, Texas, by 4iG CEO Gellért Jászai and SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell. Under the terms of the deal, first-generation Starlink Mobile commercial services will debut in Hungary and Albania. The rollout will eventually transition to V2 technology, with services expanding into Montenegro and North Macedonia. According to Shotwell, the V2 iteration will leverage SpaceX's global 2GHz spectrum rights to enable high-speed broadband directly to mobile phones.

The Shift to Non-Terrestrial Networks

Starlink Mobile allows LTE-compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites without specialized hardware. This capability eliminates coverage gaps in terrestrial networks, which is critical for users in coastal or mountainous regions where traditional cell towers are impractical. The V2 rollout will specifically utilize these 2GHz spectrum rights to provide 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities, effectively turning the satellite constellation into a cell tower in space.

National Security and Sovereignty

Beyond commercial connectivity, the partnership includes the development of "Sovereign Solutions." This service is engineered for national security purposes, providing end-to-end secured data communications to ensure government and military data remains protected. These sovereign networks are scheduled to launch next year, providing a secure alternative to standard commercial satellite links.

Regional Implications

This partnership positions Hungary as an early adopter of satellite-to-mobile technology within the European Union. By integrating these services into the Western Balkans, 4iG and SpaceX are enhancing regional resilience for critical infrastructure. Jászai noted that the companies have developed a first-of-its-kind model that combines commercial satellite-to-mobile technology with the establishment of Europe's first sovereign satellite solutions.
