Airtel and Starlink Launch Africa's First Direct-to-Cell Satellite Service in DRC
Compatible Android phones can now connect directly to satellites for SMS and light data in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Airtel Africa and SpaceX's Starlink launched Africa's first commercial direct-to-cell satellite service in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on August 14, 2026. The deployment allows users with compatible LTE Android smartphones to connect directly to satellites, bypassing the need for traditional terrestrial towers.
The service was activated in Kinshasa in coordination with the regulator ARPTC. Unlike traditional satellite internet, this technology requires no additional hardware or satellite dishes; users can send SMS and use light-data applications, such as WhatsApp, directly from existing mobile devices. The current phase of the rollout does not support full broadband speeds or video streaming.
The Path to Connectivity
This launch is the first commercial milestone of a broader partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX announced on December 16, 2025. That agreement aims to extend satellite-to-mobile connectivity across 14 African markets, targeting a customer base of approximately 174 million people. To facilitate the rollout, DRC authorities granted Starlink DRC SA a full telecommunications licence on May 2, 2025.
The DRC was selected as the initial market due to its challenging geography. Dense forests and vast distances make the construction and maintenance of physical cell towers prohibitively expensive and often impractical. Thierry Diasonama, Airtel DRC Chief Executive, noted that the country’s scale and geography place many citizens beyond the reach of standard mobile infrastructure, and that the satellite layer is designed to address that specific gap.
Industry Implications
This deployment represents a structural shift in how rural connectivity is approached across the continent. By moving satellite-to-mobile technology from the pilot phase to a commercially viable product, the partnership provides a blueprint for closing the digital divide in low-density or high-risk areas.
For the industry, this model reduces the need for massive capital expenditure on physical infrastructure while ensuring that national regulators can maintain visibility of network traffic through local operators. It transforms the satellite from a niche tool for specialized hardware into a seamless extension of the existing mobile ecosystem.
Future Outlook
As the service stabilizes in the DRC, the industry will be watching for expansion into the remaining 13 African markets outlined in the SpaceX partnership. Future updates are expected to focus on increasing data throughput to move beyond light-data applications. While the current focus remains on basic communication, the successful integration of satellite layers into commercial LTE networks suggests a future where "dead zones" in rural Africa could be eliminated entirely.
