Apple Enters Foldable Market with iPhone Duo, Projected for 25% Share by 2026

The tech giant's first foldable device is expected to challenge Samsung's dominance in a stagnant global market.

Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, a book-style inward-folding device. The move marks a significant strategic shift for the company, which has long avoided the segment while competitors iterated on folding hardware.

The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch cover display, housed within a Grade 5 titanium frame. To address the common industry struggle with screen creases, Apple utilized a 10-layer stack of ultra-thin materials and a nano-texture surface treatment on the inner display. According to Apple, the transition between the open and closed states is designed to feel fluid. The device enters the premium tier with a starting price of $1,999.

Market Dynamics and Projections

Apple's entry arrives as the broader foldable market faces a period of sluggish growth. Market research firm TrendForce forecasts that global foldable smartphone shipments in 2026 will reach 20.2 million units, representing a marginal year-over-year increase of just 0.5%.

Despite the slow overall growth, TrendForce predicts Apple will rapidly capture a significant portion of the segment. The company is projected to ship approximately 5 million iPhone Duo units in 2026, securing a 24.8% market share. This would position Apple as the second-largest player in the foldable space, trailing only Samsung, which is expected to maintain the lead with a 35.1% share and roughly 7.1 million units. Notably, TrendForce expects combined shipments from other Android brands, excluding Apple, to drop by more than 20% year-over-year in 2026.

Industry Implications

The arrival of the iPhone Duo is expected to serve as a catalyst for the entire foldable ecosystem. By integrating its own strict hardware requirements, Apple is likely to push suppliers to improve the quality of hinges and ultra-thin glass (UTG). This pressure often accelerates supply chain maturation, potentially forcing established rivals like Samsung and Huawei to refine their own hardware strategies to remain competitive.

Furthermore, the shift in the market suggests a transition from basic folding mechanics toward structural refinements and deeper software integration. The iPhone Duo leverages iOS 27, which introduces AI-driven interfaces and enhanced multitasking specifically optimized for the larger foldable canvas.

What to Watch

While the initial projections are bullish, the industry will be watching to see if the $1,999 price point deters mass adoption or if the "Apple effect" can spark a new wave of consumer interest in foldables. It remains to be seen if the 10-layer material stack successfully eliminates the crease to a degree that satisfies Apple's historically exacting standards for display quality.
