Apple enters foldable market with premium iPhone Duo
The company's first foldable handset targets the high-end segment with a $1,999 starting price and A20 Pro silicon.
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, a strategic move to challenge established competitors like the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold. The device marks the first time the company has moved away from the traditional slab design to offer a collapsible form factor.
The iPhone Duo features a dual-screen configuration consisting of a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer cover. Built for durability, the handset utilizes a titanium frame paired with Ceramic Shield 2 on the cover and Ceramic Shield on the rear. It carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, placing its ruggedness on par with the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Internally, the device is powered by the A20 Pro chip and includes support for the Apple Pencil. In the U.S., the 256GB model starts at $1,999, with preorders having begun Oct. 16 and a general release set for Oct. 23.
Bridging the Device Gap
Apple is positioning the iPhone Duo alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, utilizing what is described as a "passport-size" form factor. This design choice is intended to bridge the utility gap between a standard compact smartphone and the larger iPad Mini. While the device emphasizes a minimized screen crease and premium materials, it faces stiff hardware competition from Android rivals. According to NanoReview, the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold holds a memory advantage with 16GB of RAM compared to the 12GB found in the iPhone Duo, while also offering a rear camera equipped with 5x optical zoom.
Market Implications
The arrival of a foldable iPhone is expected to shift the foldable category from a niche enthusiast market to the mainstream. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president of devices at IDC, noted that the iPhone Duo serves as a direct test of whether Apple can leverage its ecosystem integration and premium positioning to reshape a segment that has remained selective thus far. The potential for market disruption is significant; IDC forecasts that Apple could capture nearly 40% of the global foldable market share by the end of next year.
The Road Ahead
Industry analysts are now watching to see if Apple's entry will trigger a surge in overall category shipments. IDC projections suggest Apple could ship over 17 million units by 2027, potentially driving a substantial boost in global foldable adoption. As the device hits shelves on Oct. 23, the primary focus will be on whether the $1,999 price point and A20 Pro performance are enough to lure users away from established foldable ecosystems.
