Apple Hikes Prices Across Entire iPhone Lineup by $100

In a departure from tradition, Apple is raising costs for both new and legacy models to offset rising component expenses.

Apple has implemented a $100 price increase across its entire current iPhone lineup, marking a significant shift in how the company manages hardware pricing. The move affects everything from the latest flagship releases to older generations that typically see price cuts.

According to PCMag, the hikes apply to both the newly launched iPhone 18 Pro series and existing legacy models. The iPhone 18 Pro now starts at $1,199, up from the $1,099 starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max has risen to $1,299 from $1,199. The increase extends deep into the catalog: the iPhone 17 has moved from $799 to $899, the iPhone 17e from $599 to $699, the iPhone Air from $999 to $1,099, and the iPhone 16 from $699 to $799. These adjustments coincide with the debut of the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable device, which enters the market at $1,999.

A Shift in Strategy

This pricing action deviates from Apple's historical pattern, where older models were generally discounted following the launch of a new generation to drive volume among budget-conscious consumers. Instead, Apple is now increasing the cost of legacy hardware. This follows a broader trend of price hikes across other product lines, including iPads, Macs, HomePods, and the Vision Pro. The move was foreshadowed in mid-June when former CEO Tim Cook hinted that such price increases were "unavoidable."

Market Implications

Apple attributes these hikes to rising global costs for memory and other critical components. By raising prices on older models rather than discounting them, Apple is placing increased financial pressure on its user base. To mitigate the impact of higher upfront costs, the company has introduced the "Apple Upgrade" leasing program in partnership with Klarna. This shift suggests a strategic pivot toward recurring revenue and leasing models as the baseline cost of premium hardware continues to climb.

What to Watch

Industry analysts are now monitoring whether this aggressive pricing strategy affects iPhone shipment volumes or if the Apple Upgrade program can sufficiently offset the sticker shock. While the component cost increases provide a technical justification, the long-term effect on consumer loyalty and the adoption rate of the high-priced iPhone Duo remains to be seen.
