Apple iOS 26.3 Adds Tool to Mask Precise Location from Cellular Carriers

Apple has introduced a new privacy control in iOS 26.3 designed to limit the granularity of location data shared with cellular providers. The feature, titled 'Limit Precise Location,' allows users to mask their exact coordinates from wireless carriers, shifting the data shared from precise street addresses to approximate neighborhood-level locations.
This feature is not available to all iPhone users due to strict hardware requirements. To utilize 'Limit Precise Location,' a device must be equipped with Apple's C1 or C1X modem. These specific components are currently found only in the iPhone Air, the iPhone 16e, and the cellular version of the iPad Pro M5. Furthermore, carrier support is currently limited; in the United States, Boost Mobile is the only provider supporting the feature, although some carriers in Asia and Europe have also implemented it.
The Battle Over Tower Data
This update addresses a long-standing privacy gap regarding how cellular networks operate. Carriers inherently track device locations through cell tower triangulation to optimize network performance and facilitate emergency services. However, this infrastructure has historically been a source of privacy leaks. Major wireless carriers have previously faced fines from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the unauthorized sharing and selling of customer location data to third parties.
While Apple began introducing more granular location controls for apps with the release of iOS 14, those settings primarily governed software-level access. The new iOS 26.3 feature represents a deeper integration of privacy, moving the control from the application layer down to the modem hardware itself.
