Apple Launches AirPods 5 With Enhanced Noise Cancellation and Tiered Pricing

Apple officially unveiled the AirPods 5 on September 9 during its "Surprise and Shine" event, introducing a refreshed lineup of open-ear earbuds. The update focuses on narrowing the performance gap between the entry-level series and the premium AirPods Pro by integrating advanced noise-blocking technology and updated silicon.
The new lineup is split into two distinct tiers to provide more consumer choice. A base model is available for $129, while a higher-end version featuring a wireless charging case is priced at $149. The standout technical achievement of the AirPods 5 is the upgraded Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Apple claims the new system is up to 50% more effective at reducing external noise compared to the ANC found in the AirPods 4.
Bridging the Pro Gap
These earbuds arrive as the successor to the AirPods 4, which have been the standard for approximately two years. By introducing the H2 Wireless chip to this line, Apple is continuing a strategic effort to offer a tiered "open-ear" budget ecosystem. This allows the company to maintain the high-margin, silicone-tipped AirPods Pro for power users while migrating high-end features—such as personalized spatial audio—down to the more accessible base models.
The AI Ecosystem Push
Beyond the hardware, the AirPods 5 serve as a vehicle for Apple's broader push into generative AI. The integration of the H2 chip enables deeper synergy with Siri AI, signaling a shift toward making wearables a primary interface for AI-driven interactions. However, the upgrade may not be essential for everyone. Kate Kozuch, Head of Video at Tom's Guide, noted that while the bass showed a noticeable improvement, she does not believe users currently owning AirPods 4 need to upgrade.

Industry observers are still verifying the exact battery life gains over the previous generation and the specifics of new stem-based touch controls.
