Apple is introducing a feature called "iPhone Handoff" in iOS 27 to simplify the experience for users who carry multiple devices. The tool allows a single cellular plan and phone number to be shared between a primary iPhone and a secondary companion device.

According to details spotted in iOS 27 beta 8 and discussed during WWDC 2026, the system utilizes dual eSIMs to synchronize the cellular identity across both handsets. Unlike traditional mirroring services, this feature operates at the network and eSIM level. This architecture ensures that the companion device remains a fully functional, standalone cellular device, maintaining connectivity even if the primary iPhone is powered off.

The technical shift

For years, power users and professionals have managed two phones by using separate numbers or relying on software-based call forwarding, which often introduces lag or reliability issues. iPhone Handoff moves the solution to the carrier level, treating the two devices as a unified endpoint for a single subscription. However, the feature is not universal; it requires specific carrier support to function. T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom have been cited as early partners for the rollout.

Whether Android can coordinate with a fragmented landscape of global carriers to match this implementation remains to be seen.
