Apple's iPhone Duo Debuts in India With Steep Price Premium Over US

The first foldable iPhone arrives with a base price of Rs 2,99,900, driven by import duties and a shift toward 'uber-premium' value growth.

Apple launched its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, on September 9, 2026, introducing a pricing structure in India that significantly exceeds its US counterpart. The move signals a strategic pivot for the company as it tests the upper limits of the Indian luxury tech market.

The base 256GB model of the iPhone Duo is priced at Rs 2,99,900 in India, while the same variant retails for $1,999 in the United States. For users seeking maximum storage, the top-end 2TB model is available in India for Rs 4,49,900. This substantial price gap is primarily attributed to the device's status as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Because the iPhone Duo is imported rather than locally manufactured, it incurs an 18% GST and import duties that ETV Bharat reports at approximately 28%, while Tarun Pathak of Counterpoint Research estimates them at 17%.

The Manufacturing Hurdle

Unlike previous iPhone models, the Duo is not assembled within India. According to reports from ETV Bharat, the complexity of the device's hardware—specifically the flexible OLED panels and intricate hinge mechanisms—precludes local assembly at this stage. This reliance on imports ensures that the device remains subject to high customs levies, preventing the price parity seen with some other Apple products that benefit from local production.

A Shift to Value-Based Growth

The aggressive pricing reflects a broader change in Apple's regional strategy, moving away from volume-based growth toward a value-based approach. With overall smartphone shipments in India expected to decline in 2026, Apple is narrowing its focus to a wealthy segment comprising roughly 5% of the population.

Prabhu Ram, VP of the Industry Research Group at CMR India, described the Duo as an "uber-premium" tier that sits above the existing ultra-premium segment. Ram noted that the device serves primarily as a "halo product" designed to lift the average selling price (ASP) across Apple's entire portfolio and reinforce the brand's prestige in the region.

Market Implications

By positioning the iPhone Duo as a luxury status symbol, Apple is testing the ceiling of premium pricing in one of its most critical growth markets. The high cost underscores the ongoing impact of India's import duties on high-tech electronics and suggests a growing reliance on financing and EMI options to make such devices accessible to an affluent but limited consumer base.

What to Watch

Industry observers will now monitor whether the "halo effect" of the Duo successfully drives sales of more affordable iPhone models or if the steep pricing alienates potential early adopters. It remains to be seen if Apple will eventually localize the production of foldable components to reduce the tax burden and lower the retail price for Indian consumers.
