According to reports from 36kr, former Apple design chief Jony Ive envisioned an iPhone that exists as a single, seamless piece of glass. This concept describes a "quiet slab of black glass" where the traditional interruptions of hardware—such as bezels and front-facing sensors—effectively recede behind the digital content, leaving the user with an uninterrupted visual experience.

The Path to a Monolith

This vision is not a sudden pivot but the culmination of a decade-long iterative process. Apple has systematically stripped away physical interruptions from the iPhone's exterior to approach this aesthetic. The transition began with the removal of the physical Home button and the integration of Face ID, which allowed the screen to expand across the front of the device. By continuously shrinking bezels and hiding sensors beneath the display, Apple has moved closer to a form where the hardware disappears into the glass.

Engineering the Impossible

Achieving a true all-glass unibody would represent a fundamental paradigm shift in industrial design. Currently, iPhones rely on a hybrid construction, typically utilizing a metal frame to provide structural integrity and a housing for internal components. Moving to a single integrated piece of glass would eliminate the need for these metal frames and traditional assembly joints, creating a visually pure object.

However, this transition introduces extreme manufacturing difficulties. Glass is inherently brittle compared to aluminum or titanium, raising significant concerns regarding durability and impact resistance. Furthermore, engineers must solve the problem of internal component housing; without a metal chassis to anchor the battery, logic board, and camera modules, the internal architecture of the phone would require a complete redesign to ensure the device remains functional and secure.

The Future of the Form

While the all-glass iPhone remains a technical ambition rather than a retail product, it serves as the North Star for Apple's hardware evolution.
