Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro with 2nm A20 Chip and Variable Aperture Camera

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, marking a significant pivot in both internal architecture and external design. The launch arrives alongside the iPhone Duo, the company's first foray into foldable handsets.
The new Pro models are powered by the first-generation A20 Pro silicon, the first Apple chip built on a 2nm process. This processor features a six-core CPU comprising four efficiency cores and dedicated neural accelerators. On the hardware front, the main 48MP camera now includes a mechanical variable aperture. This system utilizes six laser-cut polymer blades to allow the aperture to shift between f/1.8 and f/4.0, providing photographers with greater control over depth of field and light intake.
A Shift in Materials and Thermals
This generation represents a departure from the titanium finishes of recent years. Apple has moved toward a more vibrant aluminum unibody construction paired with a glass back. This shift makes the Pro series the most colorful it has been in years, bringing the chassis closer in vibrancy to the base-model iPhones. The lineup is available in four colors, including new Burgundy and Glacier options.
To handle the increased demands of the A20 Pro chip, Apple has overhauled its thermal management. The devices now feature a vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro, supplemented by the addition of deionized water cooling. However, these internal upgrades have impacted the physical footprint; the iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 8.78 ounces, up from the 8.22 ounces of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. This makes it the heaviest iPhone to date, exceeding even the weight of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The transition to 2nm silicon and the introduction of a mechanical aperture are substantial engineering leaps for the mobile industry. By prioritizing advanced cooling through vapor chambers and deionized water, Apple is signaling a push for higher sustained performance. Preorders for the new lineup begin Sept. 12, with official sales starting Sept. 18. Pricing starts at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. While the hardware specifications are now public, the industry will be watching to see how the new 2nm process translates to real-world battery life and efficiency gains compared to previous generations.
