Apple Watch Series 12 Doubles RAM to Power AI and Advanced Health Tracking

Apple has launched the Apple Watch Series 12, a release that prioritizes significant internal hardware upgrades over a physical redesign. While the exterior remains nearly identical to the Series 11, the new model introduces a powerful S11 chip and a suite of AI-driven features designed to transform the device from a notification hub into an active health assistant.
Under the hood, the Series 12 features 4GB of RAM, doubling the 2GB capacity found in the Series 11. This memory boost supports the new "Audio Intelligence" suite, which includes Siri Recap and Live Rewind. Beyond processing power, Apple has improved utility with "Precision L1 GPS" for better location accuracy and faster charging speeds; a 15-minute charge now provides up to 12 hours of battery life, a notable increase from the 8 hours offered by the Series 11. Visually, the watch introduces a Dark Bronze aluminum finish and Ceramic options in Night Blue and Pearl White. However, slight dimensional changes mean the 42mm model is now 37mm wide (up from 36mm) and the 46mm model is 40mm wide (up from 39mm), resulting in slightly larger bezels.
A Shift Toward Continuous Monitoring
The most substantial update is the introduction of a new "Health Sensing System." This hardware allows for high-frequency background heart rate tracking and heart rate variability (HRV) measurements up to 24 times more frequently than previous models. Leveraging this data, Apple has introduced a "Readiness" feature. According to Apple, this tool analyzes a user’s sleep score, vitals, training load, and recent activity to provide a daily insight into their physical capacity for the day ahead.

This transition toward continuous sensing and increased memory suggests a long-term strategic play by Apple to support complex on-device large language models (LLMs). By doubling the RAM and integrating specialized AI features, Apple is positioning the Series 12 to compete more aggressively with professional-grade fitness trackers and medical-grade monitoring tools. The focus has shifted from the display—which retains the 2,000-nit OLED Retina screen—to the intelligence powering the software.
