Arm Debuts Mali G2-Ultra NX to Bring AI-Native Graphics to Android
The new GPU integrates neural accelerators directly into the shader core to enable PC-style upscaling and frame generation on mobile devices.
Arm has introduced the Mali G2-Ultra NX, its first "AI-native" GPU designed to bring high-end neural graphics to the Android ecosystem. The hardware enables PC-style features, including AI upscaling and frame generation, to run efficiently on mobile devices.
The technology makes its debut in mainland China via the Xiaomi 18 Fold, which utilizes a custom Xring O3 chip. At the heart of the G2-Ultra NX is the NX neural accelerator, a dedicated hardware block integrated directly into the shader core that supports INT8 and INT16 operations. This architecture allows the GPU to handle three primary neural tasks: Neural Super Sampling (NSS) for upscaling, Neural Frame Rate Upscaling (NRFU) for frame generation, and NSSD, which combines upscaling with ray-tracing denoising.
The Shift to Neural Rendering
Mobile graphics have historically struggled with the immense power requirements of high-resolution rendering and real-time ray tracing. While desktop GPUs have mitigated these issues using AI-driven techniques—most notably NVIDIA's DLSS—mobile chips have lacked the dedicated, efficient hardware necessary to perform similar tasks without overheating or draining the battery.
Arm is addressing this gap by shifting the burden from raw pixel pushing to AI reconstruction. To demonstrate this capability, Arm's "Neural Dawn" demo showed a 4x performance efficiency boost, increasing output from 15fps to 60fps. Furthermore, the demo revealed a 70% reduction in DRAM memory traffic compared to the previous G1-Ultra generation. Beyond AI, the G2 architecture introduces third-generation hardware ray tracing, which Arm claims delivers an 18% to 24% performance improvement over its predecessor.
Industry Implications
This transition to neural rendering represents a significant shift for the handheld market. By utilizing AI to reconstruct images rather than rendering every pixel natively, mobile devices can deliver high-fidelity, high-frame-rate gaming without the massive battery drain or thermal throttling that typically plagues mobile hardware. This capability brings Android devices closer to "console-quality" visuals, potentially transforming how high-end games are developed and played on mobile platforms.

The introduction of the Mali G2-Ultra NX places Arm in direct competition with other chipmakers, such as Qualcomm, which is developing its own "Neural Fusion" capabilities.
