AST SpaceMobile Scales BlueBird Constellation for Direct-to-Device Connectivity
The company is deploying next-generation satellites to bring cellular connectivity to unmodified smartphones via AT&T and Verizon.
AST SpaceMobile is advancing its goal of eliminating cellular dead zones by expanding its constellation of BlueBird satellites. The company is building a space-based 4G/5G network designed to connect directly to standard smartphones, removing the need for specialized satellite hardware.
The deployment phase accelerated in late 2024 and 2025. The first five commercial BlueBird satellites were launched on September 12, 2024, via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This was followed by the launch of BlueBird 6, a next-generation satellite, on December 23, 2025, using an LVM3 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Center. To further build out the network, AST SpaceMobile has scheduled the launch of BlueBird satellites 11, 12, and 13 for August 5, 2026, via another SpaceX Falcon 9 mission.
The Infrastructure Shift
Unlike traditional satellite communications that require bulky antennas or proprietary handsets, AST SpaceMobile leverages existing terrestrial mobile infrastructure. In the United States, the company is partnering with AT&T and Verizon, utilizing their 850MHz spectrum to enable connectivity. This approach allows the satellites to act as "cell towers in space," bridging the gap between orbital infrastructure and consumer devices.
To support this ambitious scale, the FCC has approved a commercial license for a constellation of up to 248 satellites. This regulatory green light ensures that the company can expand its footprint to provide consistent, high-speed data and voice services globally. By integrating directly with the spectrum already owned by major carriers, AST SpaceMobile bypasses the need for users to purchase new equipment, effectively turning every compatible smartphone into a satellite-connected device.
This shift represents a fundamental change in how the world accesses connectivity. While previous satellite efforts focused on niche markets or emergency beacons, the BlueBird constellation aims for mass-market penetration. The ability to maintain a seamless handoff between terrestrial towers and space-based nodes could eventually make cellular outages a thing of the past, regardless of geographic isolation or infrastructure failure.
