Audacity has released Version 4.0, marking the most significant feature overhaul for the open-source audio editor in several years. The update aims to bridge the gap between basic recording software and professional Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs).

Developed by Muse Group and released on September 3, 2026, the update centers on a modernized interface rebuilt on Qt. This new design introduces a native dark mode complemented by vibrant accent colors for UI elements. For users resistant to the change, the software includes a 'Classic' workspace option during setup to maintain the original look and feel.

Professional Editing Suite
