Australia tests AusAlert: nationwide emergency warning system bypasses silent mode
First national test of cell-broadcast technology reaches millions of devices in bid to fix SMS failures exposed during Black Summer bushfires.
A siren across the continent
At 2pm AEST on Monday, July 27, 2026, a sharp siren cut through silence — literally. Across Australia, compatible mobile devices erupted with a 10-second alarm and pop-up notification, marking the first nationwide test of AusAlert, the emergency warning system built to fix the communication failures that cost lives during the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires.
The test ran simultaneously across time zones: 1:30pm ACST in South Australia and the Northern Territory, noon in Western Australia, and 11am on Christmas Island. Unlike the old SMS-based Emergency Alert system, AusAlert uses cell-broadcast technology that beams messages directly from mobile towers to devices, bypassing network congestion and reducing latency.
Why the old system failed
The existing emergency alert infrastructure relied on standard SMS, which proved unreliable during crises. "Throughout a series of emergencies and disasters, that system has had real latency in terms of people receiving the messages," said Pat Hetherington, interim coordinator general at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
During the Black Summer fires, some residents never received warnings as networks buckled under load. The royal commission into the disasters recommended a nationally consistent system capable of geofencing alerts to specific high-risk areas. AusAlert is the result.
What the test proved
Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain called AusAlert "far superior" to current state-based systems, saying it would reach "more people in a more timely manner." The cell-broadcast approach means alerts arrive regardless of carrier or network congestion, and the system overrides Do Not Disturb and silent modes to ensure the siren sounds.
The alert may also play through vehicle speakers via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or Bluetooth connections, potentially interrupting navigation or media playback — a feature designed to reach drivers who might not have their phones in hand.
Who received the alert
Compatible devices included Android phones running version 12 or later, iPhone 11 and newer models on iOS 26.4 or later, and Apple Watch models SE2, SE3, Series 6 and up running watchOS 26.4 or later. iPads are not supported.
The system is expected to launch nationally in October, pending final validation from this test phase.
Concerns remain
Despite the technical upgrade, critics have flagged two issues. Messages are currently English-only, raising accessibility concerns for non-English speakers in high-risk communities. Advocacy groups have also warned that the system could expose "safe phones" used by victims of domestic and family violence, as alerts bypass silent modes that some users rely on for privacy.
NEMA and state emergency services are expected to review test data before the October rollout, with particular attention to delivery rates across regional and remote areas where tower coverage varies.
