Australian Smartphone Sales Rise 8% as Gen AI and 3G Shutdown Drive Upgrades
Sales hit 3.98 million units in the first half of 2024, fueled by a surge in premium AI-capable devices.
The Australian smartphone market rebounded in the first half of 2024, with sales increasing 8% year-on-year. This growth signals a shift in consumer behavior as legacy network shutdowns and new hardware capabilities trigger a wave of upgrades.
Total sales reached 3.98 million units during the first six months of the year. Android devices led the surge with a 12% increase, while Apple's iPhone sales grew by 4%. A primary driver of this activity was the adoption of generative AI; phones featuring Gen AI capabilities accounted for approximately one-third of all total sales in H1 2024. Additionally, foldable devices are gaining traction, moving from 8% of total Android sales in 2023 to a projected 10% for 2024.
The Push Toward Premium
This recovery coincides with significant infrastructure changes. Major carriers Telstra and Optus have been shutting down their 3G networks, effectively forcing users of legacy devices to upgrade to newer hardware to maintain connectivity.
However, the market is experiencing a distinct polarization. Consumers are increasingly splitting between the budget segment—devices priced under $300—and the premium segment, where handsets exceed $1,000. This trend persists despite a general slowdown in how often Australians buy new phones. The average smartphone replacement cycle extended by six months in 2023, meaning the typical user now holds onto their device for nearly four years.
New Incentives for Upgrading
Industry experts suggest that the introduction of on-device generative AI from vendors like Samsung and Apple is providing the necessary incentive to break these longer replacement cycles. Foad Fadaghi, Managing Director at Telsyte, noted that "on-device generative Ai upgrades and new form factors are breathing life into a very mature sector."
For the industry, this shift indicates that software intelligence and physical design—such as foldables—are now the primary catalysts for growth in a saturated market. The ability of AI to provide tangible utility is outweighing the tendency of users to keep older hardware.
Future Market Outlook
Looking ahead, momentum may shift further toward iOS. While Android currently leads in growth percentage, the rollout of "Apple Intelligence" and the potential launch of an Apple foldable device are expected to trigger a substantial upgrade cycle among iPhone users.
Market analysts will be watching to see if these upcoming Apple releases can reclaim the growth momentum from Android. For now, the combination of network necessity and AI curiosity has successfully reversed the downward trend in Australian handset sales.
