ByteDance officially released the consumer version of the Doubao Mobile Assistant on September 14, transitioning the technology from a technical preview to a public product. The launch marks a strategic move toward "Agentic AI," shifting the user experience from basic Q&A to a system-level agent capable of screen understanding and cross-app execution.
To facilitate this automation, ByteDance introduced the Screen Automated Operation Statement Protocol (SAEP). This protocol allows third-party app developers to explicitly specify which AI operations are permitted or rejected within their applications, creating a standardized framework for how the assistant interacts with external software. This structured approach addresses early prototype challenges where security risk controls in various applications caused unexpected exits or login failures.
Hardware Integration Strategy
Rather than developing its own smartphone, ByteDance is pursuing a partnership-led model to integrate its AI layer into devices from major manufacturers. A primary example of this strategy is the collaboration with ZTE's Nubia brand. The Nubia NaviX Ultra, which comes equipped with the Doubao Mobile Assistant, is scheduled for official release on September 16.
Market demand for this integration has already shown significant momentum. A previous prototype device, the Nubia M153, originally priced at 3,499 yuan, saw high demand that drove resale prices up to 4,999 yuan on the Xianyu marketplace.
