The U.S. Department of Energy has approved a $1.9 billion loan to restart a shuttered nuclear facility in Iowa to power Google's artificial intelligence infrastructure. Under the terms of the agreement, the DOE provided a loan of up to $1.9 billion to NextEra Energy to revive the Duane Arnold Energy Center. The Duane Arnold Energy Center was previously the only nuclear facility in Iowa. While it had been slated for decommissioning, its closure was accelerated in August 2020. A severe windstorm featuring gusts of 140 mph caused significant damage to the plant's cooling towers, forcing the facility to cease operations. For several years, the plant remained dormant as a legacy of the state's previous energy landscape, but the sudden surge in computational demand has made its revival a strategic priority.

The AI Energy Bottleneck

This deal represents a fundamental shift in how technology giants approach sustainability.
