The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has officially updated the baseline for broadband internet to 100 Mbps for downloads and 20 Mbps for uploads in 2024. This shift establishes a new minimum standard for high-speed access in an era of increasing digital dependency.
These figures now serve as the federal benchmark for broadband connectivity. To determine if their current service meets these standards, users can employ third-party diagnostic tools such as Speedtest.net, Fast.com, and Cloudflare. While these tests provide a snapshot of real-time performance, results can be influenced by hardware bottlenecks and the connection method. For high-demand activities—specifically professional video conferencing and gaming—wired Ethernet connections remain superior to Wi-Fi due to increased stability and reduced interference.
Understanding the Metrics
Internet speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). A common point of confusion for consumers is the difference between these figures and actual file download speeds, which are measured in megabytes per second (MBps). Because there are eight bits in one byte, the actual speed at which a file downloads is one-eighth of the advertised Mbps connection speed.
Connection types also dictate performance symmetry. Fiber-optic connections typically offer symmetrical speeds, meaning upload and download rates are roughly equal. In contrast, cable connections generally provide significantly lower upload bandwidth compared to their download capabilities.

For the average user, the goal is to find a balance between sufficient throughput and cost. While insufficient speed makes everyday browsing a hassle, paying for excessive bandwidth often provides no noticeable benefit.
