Google adds Bluetooth diagnostics tool to Pixel phones to simplify troubleshooting
The new feature allows Pixel 6 and newer users to isolate connection failures between phone hardware and accessories.
Google has launched a dedicated Bluetooth Diagnostics tool for Pixel users to help identify and resolve wireless connection failures. The feature allows users to run targeted tests to determine if a connectivity issue originates from the smartphone, the connected accessory, or a specific functional profile.
Available for Pixel 6 and newer models, including the Pixel Fold series, the tool is located under Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth diagnostics. The utility provides specific tests for media audio—which plays a sound to verify the stream—and calls, including hands-free calling and hearing aid profiles. To assist with bug reporting, users can optionally share diagnostic data with Google, including accessory details and HCI snoop logs, which provide packet-level records of commands and events.
The complexity of wireless connectivity
Bluetooth troubleshooting has historically been an opaque process for the average consumer. Devices often report a successful "connected" status even when specific functions, such as audio streaming or microphone input, fail to operate. This ambiguity is particularly prevalent with Wireless Android Auto, a system that creates a hybrid connection by using Bluetooth for the initial handshake and phone calls while relying on Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth data transfer. Without granular tools, users often struggle to identify which of these two protocols is failing.

By providing a structured method to test individual Bluetooth profiles, Google aims to reduce the friction associated with wireless malfunctions. The ability to isolate a failure to a specific profile helps users avoid unnecessary and time-consuming factory resets. Furthermore, it prevents the common frustration of troubleshooting the wrong component, such as blaming the Bluetooth system for a failure that is actually rooted in a Wi-Fi-based Android Auto connection.

Google is not the first to implement this level of granularity; Samsung Members already offers similar individual tests and device-wide diagnostic sweeps for Galaxy hardware. As Google expands these tools to the Pixel lineup, the focus shifts to how this data will be used to improve future Android stability. It remains to be seen if Google will expand these diagnostics to other wireless protocols or integrate them more deeply into the Android Auto interface to provide real-time connection alerts.
