Google Chrome develops 'dynamic patching' to end browser restart requirements

Google is developing a "dynamic patching" system designed to apply security updates to the Chrome browser without requiring a full restart. The move aims to close the critical security gap created when users delay restarting their browsers to apply essential patches.
This shift comes as Google integrates AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) into its security pipeline to scan code more efficiently. The impact of these tools has been immediate and massive: Chrome versions 149 and 150 combined included 1,072 bug fixes, a figure that exceeds the total number of fixes found in the previous 23 versions combined.

As an interim step toward full dynamic patching, Google introduced "zero window restarts" in Chrome 150 for macOS. This feature allows the browser to apply updates automatically when all user windows are closed, even if the application continues to run in the background.
