Google Drive adds Gemini-powered file organization for paid subscribers

Google has launched "Organize My Files in Drive," an AI-driven tool designed to help users manage cluttered cloud storage. The feature leverages Gemini to analyze a user's existing folder hierarchy and suggest optimal locations for loose files.
According to Google, Gemini provides these suggestions based on a user's specific organizing structure and strategies. Users can review the AI's recommendations and use checkboxes to approve and automate the reorganization process. The tool is currently available to subscribers of Google AI Pro, AI Ultra, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans. To use the feature, users must have "Smart features in Google Workspace" enabled within their Gmail settings.
Technical Constraints
While the tool automates file movement, it operates under several strict limitations. The feature only works with private folders and is unable to organize shared files or folders. Additionally, while Gemini can suggest the creation of entirely new folders to better categorize data, it does not have the capability to rename existing files.
The Push for Workspace Integration
This rollout is part of a broader strategy to integrate Gemini AI across the Google Workspace suite, including Gmail and Docs. For many Drive users, managing massive volumes of unstructured data has remained a significant pain point, as native search and move functions often feel inadequate for large-scale cleanup.
