Google integrates Gemini Spark with Photos to automate media management

Google is rolling out an integration that allows Gemini Spark, its personal agent, to control Google Photos. This update enables users to execute complex, multi-stage workflows—including searching, editing, organizing, and sharing media—through a single prompt.
The feature is currently being released gradually to English users on both the web and mobile applications. According to Google Support, Gemini Spark can now handle sequences of tasks such as searching for specific images, enhancing their quality, creating collages, and organizing the results into albums. To ensure the safety of original media, the agent creates a new copy of a photo before applying any edits.
Beyond simple curation, the agent integrates Photos with other Connected Apps. Users can, for example, send shared album links via Gmail, Google Docs, or Messages. Additionally, the system supports recurring background automations, allowing users to automatically sort receipt photos or generate monthly highlight albums. To maintain security, Google requires explicit user confirmation for sensitive actions, such as sending emails or creating shared albums.
The shift to AI execution
This update is part of a broader strategic push to evolve Gemini from a standard chatbot into a "personal agent" capable of taking autonomous actions across the Google ecosystem. By linking the reasoning capabilities of a large language model with the storage and metadata of Google Photos, the company is moving toward a model of autonomous media management.
