Google integrates Play Books into Gemini Notebook via Expert Intelligence

Google has launched Expert Intelligence, a cross-product initiative that allows users to integrate purchased Google Play Books as grounded sources within Gemini Notebook. The move transforms static ebooks into interactive knowledge bases, enabling users to query texts and synthesize professional literature with their own personal data.
Under the new system, users can leverage their digital libraries to generate audio overviews, infographics, and quizzes based directly on the text of their books. The feature debuts with a catalog of over 100,000 titles from a wide array of major publishers, including Penguin Random House, Macmillan Publishers, O’Reilly Media, Bloomsbury, De Gruyter Brill, and Johns Hopkins University Press. To ensure copyright protection, Google has implemented strict ownership verification; users must own a title via Google Play Books to interact with it in Gemini Notebook. If a user shares a notebook containing a specific book, any recipient who does not own the title will be prompted to purchase it.
Grounding AI in Trusted Sources
Expert Intelligence is designed to move the AI experience beyond general-purpose responses by grounding interactions in high-quality, verified sources. Google describes the effort as a way to help users engage with "trusted sources through Google AI products." By allowing readers to apply the lessons from their favorite books to their own data and workflows, Google is attempting to mirror the human habit of returning to authoritative texts for guidance and application.
A New Model for Publishing
This integration represents a significant bridge between the generative AI industry and traditional publishing. By utilizing a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) workflow that enforces ownership, Google is proposing a monetization and discovery model where AI enhances book sales rather than replacing them. This approach directly addresses the ongoing tension between AI development and intellectual property rights by ensuring that authors and publishers are compensated through the existing Play Books ecosystem.
Author Collaborations and Access
To showcase the capability, Google collaborated with more than 15 bestselling authors, including Michael Pollan and Steven Pinker, to develop "Featured Notebooks" that serve as supplements to their published works. Users looking to integrate their own library can check for compatibility by looking for the "Tools" badge on a book's detail page within the Google Play Books store.
