Google has launched a suite of AI-powered theft protection features designed to secure Android devices running Android 10 and above. These tools transition mobile security from a reactionary model to a proactive one by automatically locking screens during active theft attempts.

The rollout introduces three primary mechanisms to prevent unauthorized access. The Theft Detection Lock utilizes on-device AI and motion sensors to identify the specific physical patterns of a "snatch-and-run," such as when a phone is grabbed and moved quickly via running, biking, or driving. Once this motion is detected, the device automatically locks the screen. To counter thieves who attempt to hide a device, the Offline Device Lock triggers a screen lock if connectivity is disabled through Airplane Mode or the removal of a SIM card. Additionally, Google has introduced Remote Lock, which enables users to secure their device from any web browser by visiting android.com/lock and providing their phone number.

These features specifically target the common theft pattern where criminals immediately take a device offline to thwart tracking and remote wiping. By integrating these capabilities into Google Play Services rather than tying them to a specific OS update, Google has ensured the tools are compatible with a vast range of hardware, extending back to devices running Android 10.
