Google replaces Google One colors with blue gradient AI ring
The visual update signals a strategic shift from storage-based subscriptions to AI-centric tiers.
Google is updating the visual identity of its paid subscriptions by replacing the traditional four-color ring around user account photos with a new blue gradient ring. This change serves as a specific indicator that a user is subscribed to one of the company's paid AI tiers.
According to 9to5Google, the new blue gradient ring replaces the red, blue, green, and yellow ring previously used to denote Google One storage subscribers. This new indicator is specifically tied to subscriptions for AI Plus, AI Pro, and AI Ultra tiers. Alongside the ring, Google is rolling out a redesigned, more compact fullscreen account menu that features a dedicated card displaying the user's specific tier, email address, and name.
A shift in visual language
For several years, the multi-colored ring was the primary signifier for Google One members, focusing on the value of expanded cloud storage. However, as Google pivots its consumer subscription model toward artificial intelligence, the company is updating its visual language to distinguish AI subscribers from standard storage users. This transition reflects a broader effort to align the user interface with the current product roadmap.
From storage to intelligence
This branding shift signals a strategic move by Google to reposition its primary value proposition. By moving away from the Google One colors, the company is transitioning from a "storage" identity to one centered on "intelligence." The update to the account management UI further prioritizes these AI upgrades, making the subscription tier a more prominent part of the user's identity within the ecosystem.
What to watch
The update is currently rolling out across the web and Android devices. While the core visual changes to the avatar ring and the account menu are confirmed, the exact pace of the rollout across all first-party applications remains to be seen as the new design language is integrated into the wider Google suite.
