Google Sheets Canvas Turns Spreadsheets Into AI-Powered Mini-Apps

Google has introduced Sheets canvas, a Gemini-powered tool that transforms traditional spreadsheets into interactive, visual "mini-apps." The feature allows users to build custom interfaces for their data using natural language prompts, removing the technical barriers typically associated with application development.

Sheets canvas operates as a dynamic read-write layer that sits directly on top of existing spreadsheet data. This architecture allows for real-time synchronization, meaning any changes made within the mini-app interface are automatically updated in the original spreadsheet. Users can generate these layouts—such as project trackers or dashboards—by describing their needs to the Gemini side panel, requiring no knowledge of coding or complex formulas. The resulting canvas exists as a dedicated tab within the workbook and can be distributed via standard Google Sheets sharing permissions.

For two decades, Google Sheets has functioned primarily as a grid of rows and columns.
