Google is testing a new multitasking capability for the Gemini overlay on Android that allows the AI interface to shrink into a floating bubble when minimized. This update transforms the AI from a transient pop-up into a persistent on-screen companion.

The new feature, spotted in Android 17 QPR 1 Beta builds, enables the Gemini overlay to collapse into a small bubble marked with the Gemini spark logo. This occurs when the user minimizes the interface or taps outside the overlay area. The system is designed so that Gemini remains available while the user multitasks; users can tap to expand or drag to move or dismiss the bubble. Tapping the bubble restores the full overlay and the previous chat state, ensuring the conversation is not lost.
