Heart Aerospace Flies X1, World's Largest Battery-Electric Aircraft

Heart Aerospace has successfully completed the maiden flight of its X1 demonstrator, marking the first time the world's largest battery-electric aircraft has taken to the skies. The flight, which took place at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, serves as a critical proof of concept for the future of regional aviation.

The X1 flew for 27 minutes, reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet. Powered by an all-electric propulsion system delivering over one megawatt of power, the aircraft demonstrated extreme energy efficiency, consuming approximately $5 worth of electricity during the mission. The aircraft represents a massive leap in electric aviation scale, featuring a 106-foot wingspan and a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds.

Path to the ES-30

The X1 is not intended for commercial service itself but acts as a full-scale demonstrator for the ES-30. The ES-30 is a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner that Heart Aerospace targets for entry into service by 2031. While the X1 is purely battery-electric, the production ES-30 is designed for versatility; it aims for an all-electric range of 125 miles, which is expected to increase to 500 miles when utilizing its hybrid engine.

Heart Aerospace is positioning this technology to decouple regional airlines from the volatility of global oil markets. By focusing on short "hopper" flights, the company aims to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the aviation industry. The company has already secured commitments from major carriers, including United Airlines and Air Canada, to support the transition to electric regional travel.

Industry Implications

This milestone is significant because it proves that battery-electric propulsion can be scaled beyond small drones or light aircraft to the size of commercial airliners. The drastic reduction in energy costs—highlighted by the $5 flight—suggests a future where regional air travel is significantly more affordable to operate. Such a shift could potentially revive underused regional airports by making short-haul routes economically viable again.

Anders Forslund, Founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace, stated that electric commercial aircraft have the potential to fundamentally reshape airline economics and lower costs for passengers. Michael Leskinen, CFO of United Airlines, described the X1's first flight as a major technical achievement.

Next Steps

With the X1 validating the necessary aerodynamics and propulsion, the company is now focusing on the next phase of development. Heart Aerospace is currently building the first pre-production ES-30 in Los Angeles. Flight testing for this pre-production model is slated for 2028, which will be the final major hurdle before the targeted 2031 commercial launch.
