Honor commits $10 billion to AI ecosystem with 'HONOR ALPHA PLAN'
The smartphone maker is pivoting toward system-level AI agents capable of automating complex tasks by reading on-screen content.
Honor has unveiled the "HONOR ALPHA PLAN," a strategic pivot that positions the smartphone as a platform for sophisticated AI agents. The initiative aims to replace traditional app-based navigation with system-level intelligence capable of executing multi-step workflows autonomously.
As part of the rollout at MWC 2025, Honor announced a commitment of over $10 billion over the next five years to build its AI ecosystem. The centerpiece of this strategy is a personal mobile AI agent based on a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Unlike traditional voice assistants, this agent can read on-screen content in real-time to automate complex tasks across different applications. In demonstrations conducted in collaboration with Google Cloud and Qualcomm Technologies, the agent showed it could handle intricate requests, such as making restaurant reservations through third-party services while simultaneously accounting for the user's calendar and current traffic conditions.
The Shift to Embodied Intelligence
This move comes as the global smartphone market shifts toward "embodied intelligence," where the operating system evolves from a simple launcher of apps into a stage for autonomous agents. Honor is joining a broader race among Chinese manufacturers, including Huawei and Xiaomi, to implement system-level AI. By moving beyond basic command-and-response interactions, Honor is attempting to create a system where the AI can make autonomous decisions and manage tasks across a fragmented app ecosystem without requiring the user to manually switch between screens.
Redefining the Mobile Experience
This represents a fundamental shift in mobile user experience. For over a decade, the primary friction in mobile computing has been the manual navigation of disparate app interfaces. By allowing an AI agent to navigate the UI on the user's behalf, Honor is attempting to reduce this friction and establish a new competitive moat. In this new paradigm, the value of a device is measured by its "agentic" capabilities—the ability to actually execute a goal—rather than traditional hardware specifications like camera megapixels or processor clock speeds.
The Road Ahead
According to Honor, these agents are designed to bring about "autonomous decision-making, advanced task management, and seamless collaboration among various AI agents." While the initial demonstrations highlight the potential for productivity and scheduling, the long-term success of the ALPHA PLAN will depend on how seamlessly these agents integrate with third-party developers and the level of trust users place in an AI that can read and interact with their entire screen.
