HP has launched the OmniBook Ultra 14, a high-performance AI PC designed to challenge the market dominance of Apple's MacBook Air and Pro. The device serves as the centerpiece of HP's strategy to integrate dedicated neural processing hardware into the premium ultraportable segment.

Positioned as a "Copilot+ PC," the laptop is available in multiple configurations, including those powered by Snapdragon X Elite processors. The AMD-powered variant features a Ryzen AI 9 365 processor equipped with a 50-TOPS NPU and Radeon 880M graphics. In performance benchmarks, the AMD model recorded a single-threaded Geekbench 6 score of 2,810 and a multi-threaded score of 14,153. To support professional workflows, HP included a 9MP webcam, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity. While some industry analysts describe it as one of the most powerful AI PCs available, other reviewers note a disparity in hardware value, with Tom's Guide stating it is a "mighty MacBook competitor, but the price is wrong."

A New Era of Branding

This release follows a major consolidation of HP's laptop portfolio. The company has retired the long-standing Dragonfly, Spectre, and Envy lines, replacing them with the unified OmniBook series. The Ultra 14 serves as the flagship consumer model in this new hierarchy. By leveraging new Neural Processing Unit (NPU) technology, HP aims to improve battery efficiency and the handling of local AI tasks, moving away from the traditional reliance on cloud-based processing for intelligent features.

The Premium Trade-off

The OmniBook Ultra 14 represents a critical test for both Windows-on-ARM (via Snapdragon) and high-efficiency x86 architectures (via AMD Ryzen AI). If the device can successfully match the battery life and performance of Apple's M-series chips while offering a more competitive price-to-spec ratio, it could shift the trajectory of the 14-inch premium market. However, the hardware is not without flaws. Specifically, the IPS display on the AMD model has been criticized for being notably dim, registering only 263 cd/m2, which may hinder its appeal for users working in bright environments.
