Humanoid robots have officially outrun the fastest man in history, clocking speeds that surpass the human world record for the 100-meter dash. This milestone marks a significant leap in mechanical velocity, though the machines still struggle with basic stability and control.

During the second annual World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, which began on August 22, the Tiangong Ultra robot completed the 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds. This time beats Usain Bolt's legendary human record of 9.58 seconds. Honor's Lightning robot also broke the human barrier, finishing the dash in 9.47 seconds. Despite these record-breaking speeds, the robots lacked braking control, slamming into pads at the finish line.

Rapid Evolution of Speed

The performance of the Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, represents a massive acceleration in capability. At the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games, the same robot won the 100-meter event with a time of 21.5 seconds—more than twice as slow as its current record.

Beijing has used these games to showcase a broad spectrum of humanoid capabilities. Beyond the short-distance sprints, the event featured a robot half-marathon, which was won by Honor's Lightning robot with a finishing time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This demonstrates a growing versatility in robotic endurance alongside the new peaks in raw speed.

The Gap in Utility

While the raw numbers suggest a victory over human biology, the lack of braking and stability highlights a fundamental gap between mechanical performance and practical utility. The fact that these machines cannot decelerate safely indicates they are currently optimized for linear bursts of speed rather than the nuanced, safe movement required for real-world environments.

For the robotics industry, this creates a clear distinction between "peak performance" and "functional utility." A robot that can outrun a human but cannot stop without crashing is a specialized laboratory achievement rather than a commercially viable tool.
