India Eyes Apple Expansion Into MacBook and iPad Production
The Indian government signals a shift toward high-end electronics manufacturing as it launches a Rs 62,500-crore incentive scheme.
Apple is expected to expand its manufacturing footprint in India beyond the iPhone to include MacBooks and iPads. The move signals a strategic pivot for the tech giant as India seeks to transform its electronics sector from a regional assembly hub into a global production powerhouse.
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the possibility of Apple diversifying its domestic production. This development coincides with the launch of the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS), a government initiative with a budgetary outlay of Rs 62,500 crore. The MPMS is scheduled for implementation from FY 2026-27 through FY 2030-31, focusing on deepening localization and fostering research and development.
The Push for Localization
India's electronics sector has experienced rapid acceleration over the last decade. This growth was largely driven by the initial Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 1.0 program, which exceeded its original targets. The new MPMS is designed to build on that momentum, moving the industry beyond simple assembly. The government's objective is to encourage the creation of intellectual property, domestic design, and a more integrated local supply chain.
Strategic Industry Shift
Expanding Apple's production to include iPads and MacBooks would represent a significant escalation in the complexity of electronics being built within India. While the iPhone has already established a strong foothold—with Counterpoint Research projecting that India will account for approximately 26% of global iPhone production by 2026—the addition of computers and tablets would validate India's capacity for high-end hardware manufacturing.
This shift aligns with India's broader strategic goal to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing. By attracting a comprehensive product line from Apple, India aims to foster a domestic ecosystem capable of supporting high-value R&D and sophisticated design work, rather than remaining dependent on imported components for final assembly.
Future Outlook
As the MPMS rolls out over the next several years, the industry will be watching for formal announcements from Apple regarding specific factory investments and product timelines. While Minister Vaishnaw has signaled the government's expectations, the exact scale of the expansion and the timeline for the first domestically produced MacBooks or iPads remain to be detailed. The success of this expansion will likely serve as a bellwether for other global tech firms considering a shift in their export production strategies.
