Milestone Launches Hot Wheels Infinite Rush as First Open-World Entry
The franchise shifts from traditional tracks to a modular open-world experience across four distinct islands.
Milestone S.r.l. has released Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, marking the first time the long-running franchise has adopted a fully open-world format. The title launches on September 10, 2026, with early access beginning on September 7.
Developed by Milestone and published by Mattel, the game replaces traditional linear racing with four expansive islands. Among these is WheelsWood, a metropolis featuring a giant gorilla perched atop its tallest building. Players have access to over 150 unlockable vehicles, which are divided into four specific performance classes: Speeders, Drifters, Titans, and Versatiles. The game is priced at $49.99 and is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
A Shift in Racing Philosophy
For decades, Hot Wheels games have focused on closed-circuit racing. Infinite Rush pivots toward a sandbox model designed to replicate the experience of playing with physical toys. This is achieved through a modular Track Builder system that allows players to construct custom paths across the environment. To further the toy-like feel, the game features indestructible cars, removing the typical damage penalties found in simulation racers.
Industry Implications
By moving to an open-world structure, Mattel is positioning the franchise to compete directly with heavyweight titles like Forza Horizon. However, the game maintains a distinct identity by leaning into its 'toy' roots rather than pursuing strict realism. According to Nikita, a senior writer at Tom's Guide, the game "scratches an itch that Forza Horizon can't." Additionally, the inclusion of the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch platform establishes the title as a key early showcase for the next-generation hardware.
Multiplayer and Connectivity
Social play is a core component of the experience, with the game supporting split-screen co-op for up to four players. While online multiplayer with cross-play is supported across most platforms, it is important to note that the Nintendo Switch 2 is excluded from these cross-play capabilities. Future updates and the full extent of the campaign progression remain the primary points of interest as the community enters the early access window.
