Moonshot AI Unveils Kimi K3, First Open 3T-Parameter Model

Beijing startup releases 2.8 trillion-parameter model with million-token context, challenging proprietary frontier AI.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · July 28, 2026

Moonshot AI has entered the frontier AI race with Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter open-weight multimodal model—the first 3T-class architecture released publicly. The Beijing-based startup launched the model on July 16, 2026, with full weights following on July 27.

Architecture and Capabilities

Kimi K3 combines a 1-million-token context window with native vision processing, built for complex reasoning and long-horizon coding tasks. The architecture introduces Kimi Delta Attention (KDA) and Attention Residuals (AttnRes) on a Stable LatentMoE framework that activates 16 of 896 experts per inference.

API access costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens—undercutting several proprietary competitors while matching their context capabilities.

Benchmark Performance

On the Frontend Code Arena leaderboard, Kimi K3 achieved a 76% pairwise win rate, outperforming Claude Fable 5 (63%) and GPT-5.6 Sol (58%) on this web engineering benchmark. This marks the first time a Chinese model has topped that leaderboard.

On overall intelligence benchmarks measured by the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, K3 placed third, trailing both Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol. The model remains competitive but does not lead across all evaluation categories.

Open-Weight Strategy

The release democratizes frontier-level AI. By making weights publicly available, Moonshot gives developers and researchers access to 3T-scale intelligence without closed API constraints, directly challenging proprietary models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Moonshot has previously positioned itself as a leader in long-context AI development. Kimi K3 extends that focus into high-end knowledge work, targeting applications requiring both massive context retention and multimodal reasoning.

Market Implications

An open 3T-class model shifts the competitive landscape. Developers now have frontier capabilities for local deployment and fine-tuning, potentially reducing reliance on closed systems for specialized workflows. The pricing structure suggests Moonshot is pursuing market share through aggressive positioning rather than premium pricing.

Kimi K3 is available on Hugging Face and through API providers including OpenRouter.
