Motorola enters book-style foldable market with ultra-thin Razr Fold
The company's first large-format foldable targets Samsung and Google with extreme thinness and high-brightness displays.
Motorola has officially launched the Razr Fold, marking the company's first venture into the book-style foldable smartphone market. Showcased at CES 2026 and formally unveiled at MWC 2026, the device is designed to compete directly with the Galaxy Z Fold and Pixel Fold series.
The Razr Fold emphasizes a slim profile and high-end specifications. The device measures approximately 4.55mm when open and 9.89mm when closed, weighing 243g with an IP49 rating. It features two high-brightness pOLED screens: a 6.6-inch external display with a 165Hz refresh rate and 6,000 nits peak brightness, and an 8.1-inch internal LTPO display supporting 120Hz and 6,200 nits peak brightness.
Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC, paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and storage options reaching up to 1TB. To support these components, Motorola integrated a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery that supports 80W wired and 50W wireless charging. The imaging system consists of a triple 50MP rear array, featuring a Sony Lytia 828 main sensor, an ultrawide lens, and a 3x periscope telephoto lens. The device ships with Android 16.
While Motorola has seen significant success with its clamshell Razr flip phones, it has previously lacked a presence in the productivity-focused book-style segment. This market is currently dominated in the U.S. by Samsung, though it faces increasing pressure from Google and Chinese manufacturers like Honor and Vivo, who frequently lead the industry in hinge technology and chassis thinness.
By prioritizing extreme thinness and display brightness, Motorola is attempting to break the existing duopoly held by Samsung and Google in Western markets. The Razr Fold represents a strategic shift toward the high-end productivity sector. Harish Jonnalagadda of Android Central noted that the device may be the "ideal rival" to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Industry observers will be watching to see how the Razr Fold's aggressive hardware specs translate to real-world durability and market adoption. While the hardware is confirmed, the long-term software support window remains a key detail for potential buyers to monitor as the device rolls out globally.
