North Carolina to Launch Mobile Driver's Licenses in December 2026

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) will launch a mobile ID program in December 2026, allowing residents to carry secure digital versions of their driver's licenses and state IDs. The timing is intended to provide immediate utility for citizens during the busy holiday travel season.

According to WRAL.com, the digital IDs will be provided at no cost to users. In the initial rollout phase, residents must download the NC Wallet app to obtain their credentials. The issuance process requires users to scan their physical ID and provide a selfie for identity verification. Once issued, these mobile IDs will be accepted at all NCDMV locations, by police officers utilizing secure readers, and at TSA checkpoints, including Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International (RDU).

Modernizing State Infrastructure

The mobile ID initiative is a key component of a broader System Modernization effort within the NCDMV. This overhaul follows a state auditor's report that criticized the department for chronic long lines and outdated technical systems. To address these inefficiencies, the NCDMV began seeking vendor proposals for a comprehensive tech modernization in 2025, eventually selecting a vendor in March 2026 to lead the transition.

This shift represents a significant move toward digital identity in North Carolina, aiming to reduce the friction of physical documentation for travelers and residents. While the program begins exclusively within the NC Wallet app, the NCDMV plans to expand accessibility shortly after launch. This expansion will allow users to store their state IDs alongside other digital payment and loyalty cards, removing the need for a standalone government application.
