OnePlus Exits North American and European Markets
The 'flagship killer' ceases new product launches in the West, shifting focus to China and India while migrating users to parent company OPPO.
OnePlus has officially ceased launching new products in North America and Europe, marking a definitive retreat from two of its most prominent Western markets. The company described the move as a strategic long-term decision, shifting its operational focus exclusively to China and India.
To manage the transition, parent company OPPO has introduced the "Join OPPO Family" rewards campaign for European users. This initiative provides migrating customers with discounts on wearables and audio equipment, as well as a free AIRVOOC 50W Magnetic Charger. Despite the exit, James Paterson, OPPO Europe Senior PR Manager, stated that "all service commitments for existing OnePlus devices in Europe and North America remain unchanged," confirming that users will continue to receive warranty support, security patches, and software updates.
A Shift in Strategy
The departure follows a period of increasing volatility for the brand, which originally gained fame as a high-value "flagship killer." The exit occurs against a backdrop of rising component costs and significant legal headwinds. Specifically, OPPO is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Apple regarding the theft of health-sensing trade secrets by a former Apple employee. In an official briefing, OnePlus summarized the strategic pivot by stating, "The right brand does the right thing in the right market."
As part of this transition, OnePlus devices are moving from OxygenOS to OPPO's ColorOS. While the migration is the primary path forward, the company has indicated that users may choose to remain on OxygenOS, though such devices will only receive maintenance-only patches.
Market Implications
The withdrawal of OnePlus removes a primary challenger in the mid-range and flagship segments. For years, the brand pressured dominant players like Samsung and Apple to compete more aggressively on value and hardware features. Without this specific competitive pressure, industry analysts suggest the market may see slower innovation cycles and a trend toward higher pricing from the remaining dominant vendors.
What Remains
While the Western exit is finalized, the company's future in other regions remains a point of speculation. For now, operations in India and China remain fully active. Users in the affected regions should monitor their device settings for the transition to ColorOS and check the "Join OPPO Family" portal for eligibility regarding the hardware rewards campaign.
