Consumers seeking free local television are being lured by fraudulent marketing claims that defy the laws of physics. A recent warning from Engadget highlights a surge of digital TV antennas, particularly on Amazon, that claim reception ranges of up to 6,000 miles.

These claims are physically impossible. TV signals travel in straight lines and cannot follow the curvature of the Earth, meaning that as the distance increases, transmitters eventually disappear below the horizon. Engadget notes that some products claim ranges of 3,600 or 5,000+ miles, leading the outlet to bluntly state, "No antenna in the world is letting you pick up the BBC in LA."

The Reality of Signal Range

Actual reception is governed by line-of-sight and geography rather than a manufacturer's "mileage rating." According to Antennas Direct, the effective limit for line-of-sight for UHF signals is generally around 70 miles. For those using indoor hardware, the reality is even more restrictive; One For All suggests a general rule of thumb of 15 miles from the nearest transmitter for reliable use.

While the FCC provides reception maps to help users identify available over-the-air signals, these tools come with a significant caveat: the maps assume the use of an outdoor antenna mounted at least 30 feet above ground level. In practice, signals are frequently blocked by buildings, trees, and mountains, further reducing the effective range regardless of the hardware's specifications.
