According to reports from Tom's Guide and MyTekBox, users are turning to tools like the "Nearby Glasses" app, developed by Yves Jeanrenaud. The app functions by scanning for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertising frames and unique manufacturer IDs to pinpoint devices such as Meta Ray-Bans. These detection tools offer a significant range, identifying signals from 10 to 32 feet indoors and up to 50 feet in open outdoor environments.

The failure of physical indicators

The shift toward signal-based detection is driven by the unreliability of built-in privacy features. While most smart glasses are equipped with a recording LED to notify bystanders when filming is active, these lights are easily bypassed. Privacy advocates note that a small piece of tape or a dab of nail polish can effectively obscure the LED, leaving those being recorded unaware of the device's activity. By targeting the wireless transmissions required for the glasses to function, users can verify the presence of a recording device regardless of whether the physical light is visible.

A growing privacy arms race

This trend represents a "cat-and-mouse" game between wearable tech manufacturers and privacy advocates. As AI-integrated glasses become more seamless and less obvious in their design, the demand for accessible detection tools is expected to rise. The ability to detect these devices using a standard smartphone's built-in Bluetooth scanner lowers the barrier for the general public to monitor their immediate environment for discreet surveillance.
