Quake Marks 30th Anniversary With Free 'Dawn of the Machine' Expansion
MachineGames and id Software release a 19-map campaign to honor the legacy of the 3D shooter pioneer.
MachineGames and id Software have released a new free episode titled "Dawn of the Machine" to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Quake. The expansion is available as a free update for owners of the Quake remaster on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PC.
The update introduces a cohesive 19-map campaign featuring continuous progression, a departure from the hub-based structure seen in previous MachineGames expansions. In addition to the single-player content, the release includes a new soundtrack and a new Deathmatch map. Lead Level Designer Andrew Yoder stated the team aimed to create an experience authentic to the original game's spirit of "Horror! Action! Madness!"
A Legacy of 3D Action
Originally released by id Software in 1996, Quake served as a pioneer for the 3D first-person shooter genre. This latest anniversary release coincides with the 30th anniversary of both the game and QuakeCon, North America's largest LAN party. MachineGames has a history of maintaining the franchise, having previously collaborated with id Software on the "Call of the Machine" and "Dimension of the Machine" expansions.
The 'Quake Club' Model
Development for this episode was handled by an internal group known as the "Quake Club," a collaboration between MachineGames and id Software. This model allowed employees to contribute skills outside their primary professional roles. For example, the expansion's soundtrack was composed by Christian Plogfors, an Advanced Level Designer at MachineGames, who also designed two of the episode's levels.
Industry Implications
The release underscores the enduring legacy of Quake and the continued commitment from Bethesda and id Software to support a title three decades after its debut. By utilizing the "Quake Club" development structure, the studios have demonstrated a sustainable way to maintain classic franchises through internal passion projects and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
What to Watch
As the community integrates the new content, the industry will be watching to see if this collaborative, internal-group model becomes a standard for supporting legacy titles. While the current expansion is a celebratory gift for the 30th anniversary, it signals a long-term strategy for keeping the Quake ecosystem active for modern audiences.
