Manually restricting background location permissions for non-essential apps can significantly extend a smartphone's daily battery life. A case study by Faith LeRoux of Android Police found that limiting these permissions added two full hours of charge to her device each day.

LeRoux achieved these gains by using the Android Privacy Dashboard and Permission Manager to identify data-hungry applications. By shifting permissions to 'Allowed only while in use' or 'Not allowed,' she reduced the frequency with which apps could request geographic data. This manual audit targets apps—particularly social media platforms—that often request background access for data collection rather than core functionality.

The Technical Drain

Background location services are power-intensive because they trigger CPU wake locks and activate critical hardware. According to LeRoux, these services force the activation of the GPS chip, Bluetooth scanner, and Wi-Fi radio. When permissions are tightened, the operating system rejects hardware API calls early in the software stack, which keeps physical radios powered down and ensures CPU sleep cycles remain uninterrupted.

Notably, users cannot rely on Airplane mode to stop this drain. Because Airplane mode does not disable the phone's internal GPS receiver, background location services can continue to process data locally, consuming power even when cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity are severed.

Automation vs. Manual Control

While Android includes an 'Adaptive Battery' feature designed to learn usage patterns and limit background consumption automatically, the system can take several weeks to optimize. This creates a gap between automated power management and the immediate results provided by manual privacy controls. For users experiencing rapid battery depletion, auditing permissions offers a tangible performance gain that does not require a waiting period for machine learning to take effect.

How to Audit Permissions

Users can access these settings through their device's specific menu paths. On Google Pixel devices running Android 16, the path is Security & privacy > Privacy controls > Permission manager. For those using Samsung devices on One UI 8.5, the settings are located under Settings > Privacy (or Security and privacy) > More privacy settings > Permission manager.

As more apps integrate location-based tracking, the tension between convenience and battery health remains. Users should continue to monitor the Permission Manager to ensure new installations do not inadvertently reset these power-saving restrictions.
