The Rwandan government has established a firm deadline of June 30, 2027, to completely switch off the country's 3G network. This strategic move aims to modernize the nation's digital infrastructure by retiring legacy technology in favor of higher-capacity connectivity.
According to the Rwandan Ministry of ICT and Innovation (MINICT), the shutdown is designed to free up critical radio spectrum. This reclaimed bandwidth is essential for accelerating the nationwide rollout of 4G services and preparing the ground for future 5G infrastructure. To ensure the transition does not disrupt essential communications, the government will conduct a series of pilot shutdowns throughout 2026.
