Samsung Begins Mass Development of Galaxy Z TriFold 2 for 2027 Launch
The Korean giant is transitioning its tri-fold experiment into a permanent flagship line with wider global availability.
Samsung has entered full-scale development of the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, moving its triple-folding smartphone from a limited proof-of-concept to a permanent fixture in its premium lineup. The device is scheduled to launch in July 2027 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 9, Z Fold 9 Ultra, and Z Flip 9, according to supply chain partners cited by ETNews and corroborated by Android Authority and SammyGuru.
The '4+4' Strategy
The 2027 lineup reflects what industry observers are calling a '4+4' flagship strategy: four Galaxy S series phones (S27, S27 Plus, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra) paired with four foldable models. This marks a significant expansion from Samsung's current approach and signals the company's intent to dominate the high-end segment against emerging Chinese foldable competitors.
The Galaxy Z TriFold 2 will maintain the same approximately 10-inch display as the first generation but will see substantially increased production volume. The original TriFold was limited to roughly 30,000 units and released only in South Korea (December 2025) and the United States (January 2026) as a market viability test.
From Experiment to Mainstream
"Samsung's first tri-fold smartphone was never meant to be a mainstream product," Sumit Adhikari of SammyGuru noted. "The experiment appears to have been a success."
That success has paved the way for the TriFold 2's wider global release. While the first generation functioned as a high-end probe into triple-folding screen technology, the successor is being treated as a production-ready device with supply chain commitments already in place.
Some reports, including from Samsung Magazine EU, suggest the TriFold 2 could feature a thinner body targeting approximately 8.9mm compared to the original's 12.9mm, enabled by a redesigned hinge mechanism. However, this specification has not been confirmed by primary outlets like ETNews and remains unverified.
Market Implications
If Samsung successfully scales tri-fold technology to mainstream production levels, the move could accelerate the convergence of smartphones and tablets. Power users who currently carry both devices may find the ~10-inch tri-fold form factor sufficient for daily productivity tasks, potentially eroding demand for traditional tablets in the premium segment.
The expanded lineup also gives Samsung more granular positioning against competitors like Huawei, Honor, and Xiaomi, all of which have pushed aggressively into multi-fold designs. By offering distinct tiers—from the Flip series through Fold Ultra to the TriFold—Samsung can address multiple price points and use cases without cannibalizing its own sales.
Details on pricing, processor specifications, and camera systems remain under wraps. Samsung is expected to reveal more concrete information closer to the July 2027 launch window.
