Samsung Defies Minimalism With 'Act of Love' Exhibition in Seoul

Partnering with 14 Korean artists at Design Miami Seoul, the tech giant pivots toward 'Expressive Design' and human-centric AI.

Samsung Electronics used Design Miami Seoul to signal a strategic departure from the industry's trend toward homogenized, minimalist aesthetics. From September 1 to 6, 2026, the company hosted a special exhibition titled "Design is an Act of Love" at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), positioning technology as a medium for emotional expression rather than mere utility.

The showcase featured 14 Korean artists who reinterpreted Samsung products—including the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Bespoke AI Refrigerator Family Hub, and the Music Studio 5—through an artistic lens. These works were displayed on 2026 OLED TV S95H screens. In a direct challenge to universal design, each screen was paired with a unique custom frame featuring distinct materials and forms, illustrating Samsung's "Expressive Design" philosophy.

A Shift Toward Expressive Design

This exhibition is part of a broader effort by Samsung to integrate art and technology, following a similarly themed showcase at Milan Design Week 2026. The "Expressive Design" approach aims to move away from neutral, universal forms toward objects that possess greater diversity and personality. By utilizing custom hardware frames, Samsung is attempting to break the cycle of minimal design that has dominated consumer electronics for the last decade.

According to Mauro Porcini, President and Chief Design Officer of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, the exhibition stems from the belief that "Design is an Act of Love," with the goal of demonstrating how technology can enrich the human experience.

Redefining AI as a Human Tool

Beyond the physical hardware, the event promoted a specific creative formula: AI x (EI + HI). In this framework, Artificial Intelligence is not viewed as a replacement for the creator, but as a tool amplified by Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Human Imagination (HI). This positioning reflects a strategic shift toward "human-centered design" in the AI era, where technology serves to enhance human empathy and creativity.

Industry Implications

Samsung's move suggests a growing recognition that as AI commoditizes functional capabilities, the primary differentiator for hardware will be emotional resonance and aesthetic individuality. By emphasizing the intersection of "immaculate engineering" and artistic imagination, the company is betting that consumers will increasingly seek products that reflect personal identity over sterile efficiency.

What's Next

As Samsung continues to roll out its AI-integrated product lines, industry observers will be watching to see if the "Expressive Design" philosophy translates from gallery installations to mass-market consumer products. While the DDP exhibition served as a conceptual manifesto, the true test will be whether the company can scale this diversity of form across its global hardware portfolio.
