Samsung Developing Color-Display Smart Glasses for 2027 Launch

The tech giant is moving beyond audio-only wearables to create discreet AR glasses featuring ultra-small microdisplays.

Samsung has begun developing its first pair of smart glasses featuring a color display, marking a significant pivot toward augmented reality hardware. The company is targeting a commercial launch window between the second half of 2027 and the first half of 2028.

To maintain a discreet, wearable form factor, Samsung has requested microdisplay proposals for panels measuring 0.2 inches or smaller. The hardware will prioritize legibility for glanceable information—such as notifications and navigation—rather than high-end multimedia. To achieve this, the displays will utilize a 4-bit gradation level, providing 16 brightness levels per color channel. Samsung is currently evaluating several panel technologies, including LEDoS and both White and RGB OLEDoS.

The Shift to Visual AR

This development follows Samsung's recent introduction of first-generation audio-only smart glasses, designed to compete with the Meta Ray-Bans. While the initial generation relied entirely on AI-powered audio, the move toward a visual interface is a logical progression. Samsung has previously filed more than 100 patents related to glasses-based displays, signaling a long-term strategic intent to integrate visual information overlays into its wearable ecosystem.

Industry Implications

By integrating a color display, Samsung is attempting to transition from simple AI wearables to true AR glasses. The goal is to reduce user dependency on smartphones for basic tasks like messaging and real-time navigation by placing the data directly in the user's field of view. This strategy positions Samsung as a direct challenger to Meta's hardware ecosystem and allows the company to leverage its partnership with Google's Android XR platform to create a cohesive software experience.

Technical Hurdles

While the technical specifications for the microdisplays are beginning to surface, the final choice between OLEDoS and LEDoS remains undecided. The primary challenge will be balancing the power requirements of a color display with the battery constraints of a lightweight frame. Furthermore, the integration of Android XR will be a critical factor in determining whether these glasses can offer a seamless user experience compared to existing competitors. If successful, Samsung could redefine the daily utility of wearables by blending the simplicity of audio AI with the utility of a heads-up display.
